Support for making submissions on two important issues

We know you’re all busy, and we want to help make having your say in government consultations as easy as possible. Below you’ll find the most important information about two current consultations: on taxing charities and the Right to Repair. For both of these, we’re encouraging members to make their own submissions, including information about why these issues are important to you and your organisation, but we also know it can be useful to see what someone else has said to spark your ideas – so feel free to use our drafts as the base for your own submissions. We’re also happy to receive feedback from members – if there’s anything you think we need to add on either of our drafts, please let Sue Coutts know on sue@zerowaste.co.nz

Happy submitting!

Consultation #1:Taxation and the not-for-profit sector

The Inland Revenue Department are currently seeking feedback relating to the charities and not-for-profit sector. The consultation document considers whether certain tax concessions available to the sector continue to be effective. It also explores whether tax obligations can be simplified, and compliance costs minimised. The Government will consider feedback and decide whether any changes should be made to current rules.

The IRD questions are here.

If you want to get a handle on the issues, you can read an excellent issues paper by Craig Fisher & Steven Moe here.

Our Draft submission is here. We’re encouraging members to make their own submissions, telling IRD how the proposals are likely to impact your organisation.

Consultation #2: Consumer Guarantees (Right to Repair) Amendment Bill

On February 19th, 2025, the Consumer Guarantees (Right to Repair) Amendment Bill passed its first reading and was referred to the Economic Development, Science, and Innovation Select Committee for the public to have our say. Now, for the first time, we have the opportunity to bring Right to Repair legislation to Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Right to Repair Network has produced a helpful guide here and lots of other great info including a 4 minute explainer: https://www.repairnetworkaotearoa.org.nz/right-to-repair-bill
