The government is consulting on a proposal to tax business income earned by charities and not-for-profits that is unrelated to their core charitable purposes (for example: revenue from op shops, merchandise sales and art auctions). The proposal also includes restrictions on investments and requirements to spend accumulated funds.
These changes will result in very serious negative impacts on zero waste enterprises. It is critical that we all make our voices heard and tell our stories about why what we do should not be subject to tax!
The consultation document can be found HERE: https://tinyurl.com/yethzkha
It includes a series of questions that organisations can respond to directly. Submissions close on March 31, 2025.
It is critical that the charitable and not-for-profit sector engages in this consultation process. Silence will be seen as support for these changes. While Ministers state that “no decisions have been made, and all feedback will be considered,” we must ensure they receive informed perspectives from across the sector.
Any policy changes must not disadvantage the many organisations that have independently raised funds to support their communities.
If you prefer to add your voice to a collective response, Hui E! Community Aotearoa have set up a survey that explains the issues and gathers your comments to include in a group submission. You can join the collective Hui E! response on the link HERE: https://tinyurl.com/yaht3t3y
